This was an absolutely fantastic lesson. Abe's curiosity for what I'm trying to do led to great questions and his wealth of knowledge led to great suggestions.
The takeaways...
- play the listeners' memory. Once a clear part of the groove (the downbeat on the "1") has been established, trust that the audience will fill that in for you, even if you don't play it. Allow the memory space to be part of the ensemble.
