brush zone extension: clicky clacky
Practices toward this Target
brush zone extension: clicky clacky
Description
Updated 190228
The Shizzle Reel didn't ever come together but I've committed to performing Kawatsura in May so I'll create a new practice target toward that end. This was the most productive (at least in terms of practice hours) practice target I've had.

The initial song idea with DW didn't pan out but my goal of improving my range on kawatsura continues and has morphed into a larger thing. The end-goal of this project will now be the "Kawatsura Shizzle Reel" video to let others know what I'm working on and seek collaborators.
Shizzle Reel structure
- Quest
- Bembe
- Ska? (make this more about swipes?)
- Boba?
- effects?
Techniques
- bobble (brush hangs over edge)
- buttlet (hitting the butt three times thanks to brush wobble)
- chidli (hitting tang of brushes together for roll)
- flutter (hit R tang into L to get wobble swipes)
- barrel roll
- palatal clicks, alveolar clicks
Original
Improvising with DW revealed that I want more dramatic "zones" to keep the brush sounds from getting stale. For a given improvisation, I want to have a base brush groove with the ability to vary and develop that groove (what I'm starting to get now) but also significantly different "zones". i.e. If the base groove is in 7, I need a gentler version with only the fingers, a clicky-clacky version played with the butts of the brushes, and a version with the ride cymbal.
This would allow me to improvise with medium-level structure. i.e.
- sparse intro
- lowest-possible-gear groove
- groove (relatively unchanging)
- groove (with ride)
- groove (with variations)
- my solo (clicky clacky, sharp tones)
- groove (with ride)
- groove
Task
- Use hard ends of brushes in practices for the next month.
- Frequently record videos of progress.
- Toward end of target term, remember to practice switching brush ends.
