Description

Develop Matsuri Crashers structure using asalato and 6/8 feel.

Ideas

- multiple gears (0~4?) allow for building complexity with solist
- bass tone would feel satisfying tonally
- bembe-style orchestration of parts (with differently tuned asalato?)

January 25 -- rough structure and video recording
Feb -- make structure assignments
Mar -- revise 60 structure to meet soloist's needs
Apr -- practice

Wrap-up

Successfully performed but it wasn't a particularly compelling groove for soloist.  Perhaps asalato should remain an accompaniment to a drum part.

Pitfalls

Risk of failure:
Final rhythms not groovy
Solution:
Since asalato can so easily feel frantic and disorderly, focus from the beginning on feeling a heavy, solid beat. Correct fundamental issues early. Practice slowly. Understand where the M pattern strikes fall on the asalato far-near movements.
Risk of failure:
Players not together
Solution:
Because there is so much noise in the basic shaker sound, it's easy to get away with sloppy asalato timing. Stick with a pattern until we can all start and stop confidently. Practice recovering from mistakes.
Risk of failure:
Asalato feature detracts from soloist
Solution:
Find a way that the asalato feature (if there is one) works both musically and in terms of the on-stage relationship between soloist and jiuchi.
