Description

Starting point videos of each player improvising end.

6 practices, approx 90 minutes each

  • 30 min Searching
take turns playing the ending downbeat for each other while one searches.  Practicing known successful arrangement concepts is okay but thinking outside the box is better!
  • 30 min Conceptual
if anything stood out as interesting from Searching session, try to figure out why.  Develop drills to explore the Concept.
  • 30 min Drills
achieving the Concept will likely require increased skill.  Do drills toward this goal.

Ending point videos of each player again.  Compare.

Successes

  • fantastic new concepts
  • specific rhythms with potential
  • continued inspiration for SugAmen

Failures

  • no ending-point video
    due to canceled last practice?
next time should take video at end of *every* practice
  • difficult to remember what we worked on and where we were
next time, in order to *actually* take "wrap-up" videos, schedule the last 12 min for this purpose
  • likely regression
harder to fix without regular practice but if particularly motivated, could create audio practice parts for working apart more easily

Pitfalls

Risk of failure:
Could "settle" for specific patterns too quickly, practicing them a ton but then later realizing they're not all that great.
Solution:
Remind each other that the purpose of Searching is to have fun and think outside the box.
Risk of failure:
Might give up on finalizing the rhythm concepts (i.e. "starting on bar 2, three times simple pattern, then variation") because the options are so numerous.
Solution:
apply "video or it didn't happen" to all ideas. Make the concept concrete!
Risk of failure:
Can easily get distracted to work on other things and not practice enough with YK.
Solution:
Laying out this specific Practice Project should help.
Risk of failure:
Ending point video might not seem different to a lay observer.
Solution:
Frequently do videos. Compare mid-point video to starting-point video and assess progress.
