Gave Randy an overview of taiko instrument names and uses.
Explained my goal of being a better accompanist. I showed some of the grooves I've been working on (? and Twiddler) and we took turns trading 4's (with 4 bars keeping time inbetween). We tried to find an equivalent for the jazz ride on naname and came closest with twiddler and byo scrapes.
All of this was really fun for me and I felt like I had enough facility to make at least semi-musical decisions. I'm not sure I was able to play anything that really got Randy going, but we were communicating and I was able to hold my own, and that's a lot for me!
to-do's
- make a list of the grooves you have, their meter and time sig., and tempos (maybe there are gaps to be filled?)
- try on kawatsura: the calypso? groove (swish swish tap tap), African bembe (ten ten teke suke suke suke), and other 6/8 and 12/8 patterns.
- continue to practice byo scrapes
