Let me recommend... the vasectomy! I've just returned from getting my tubes tied, and it feels like a body upgrade.
My partner uses an IUD and it's working perfectly, but I hate the idea that if something were to go wrong, she would shoulder all the difficulty. With the current attack on abortion rights, I thought it's time I took responsibility for my own birth control.
The procedure was almost entirely painless. My doctor (and almost all doctors, apparently) used the "no scalpel" method. The prep was probably the most uncomfortable part, where cold iodine is poured over the crotch. I think I gasped and said, "Invigorating!" A numbing creme is applied to the skin of the testicles, before shots to numb the entire area. I could barely feel the shots at all. The vas deferens from each testicle is pulled out of the scrotom through a small hole and cut, cauterized, and tied outside the body. I couldn't see or feel any of this, but the doctor explained it to me. The procedure took about 15 minutes, plus 5 minutes of chatting afterward. Dr. Matsunaga and assistant Kathy are true gems.
If you're frustrated by anti-abortion laws and you don't want to have kids, I highly recommend the vasectomy.
