Description

Goal

Perform Recital arrangement with Jedi/muting, now with KB downbeat (Sue) and YK upbeat (Gus)

Plan

time estimate: need at least 6 hours total practice

[4 hrs currently scheduled]

day 1 took about 1hr to get basics of muting and Jedi. So...
- 1 hr remaining new techniques
- 1 hr structure of new additions
- 1 hr review
- 1 hr slow practice
- 2 hrs runthroughs

Plus preview for students sometime in May (after weekday 8pm class)?

Wrap-up

toward this goal, we completed
13 practices
7:51 practice time
3 preview performances for observers

At the Grand Annex show, we dropped bachi three times in Jedi-Jedi and barely made the fourth attempt, but the audience was forgiving.  I was really pleased with our work and progress and have come away inspired to continue working.  I continue to feel deeply appreciative of Yuta for tackling this sugagaki long-term challenge with me!

Options for continued work

  • notes for Sue and Gus
YK had good suggestion... we should schedule post-concert Suga practices before the show too, and do notes or a video for future Sue and Gus to remember the new bits and pieces.
  • remove points of risk
There seem to be two key ways we drop bachi: Sue hitting Gus' bachi during muting, and Gus bachi position on drum in preparation for Jedi.  We should tackle these two issues, holding ourselves strictly to the techniques we deem best to reduce these two risks.
  • increase Jedi Jedi challenge
Create a Jedi Jedi drill with 1/2, 1, and 1.5-flip variations to best coordinate Gus bachi position and Sue strike position.
  • further develop warmup drills
    List and name current options.
  • write "experiential" piece
Compose piece that is designed specifically for YK/KB experience of playing it.  See 170512-0930 for ideas.

Pitfalls

Risk of failure:
Fragility of new Jedi stuff
Solution:
I got lucky at Recital... how do we ensure that YK will succeed?
