Cornelius at Echoplex

Wow, this was a good show.  Hiro and I both felt lucky to be there.  "A lot of people spent a lot of time putting this together..." 

The intro was delightful, featuring the silhouette of lead singer Oyamada pointing words into existence.  The concert launched into action with Point of View Point, the music video playing over the performers and the white background.  Audience-facing LED light bars and "blinder" banks of strobes were a bit over-the-top, but they were so bright I found them enjoyable with my eyes closed.  My favorite pieces were Smoke, Audio Architecture, Fit Song, and Tone Twilight Zone.

For all the wonder of the synchronized visuals, however, I don't intend to mimic Cornelius' approach.  The musicians have no freedom.  When every snare hit is mapped to a pre-rendered, pulsating shape on video, you can't change the rhythm.  The music becomes calcified by the visuals.

Perhaps the performers like it this way, but if I ever try to add visual effects, they have to allow for real-time changes to the music.
